Google ending support for 32-Bit Chrome for Linux, Debian 7 and Ubuntu 12.04

Google announced that it will drop support for 32-bit version of Linux, Debian 7 (Wheezy) and Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise).

Users affected will still be able to use Chrome after the axe has fallen, but they will no longer receive any updates. 
In a double-whammy, March will also see Google Chrome stop supporting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (which will receive critical and security bug fixes from Canonical until mid 2017).

Happy 11th Birthday, Ubuntu!

It's hard to believe that 11 years have passed since the launch of Ubuntu 4.10 "The Warty Warthog". Yes, it’s now been eleven years, and some twenty-two releases of Ubuntu, since Mark Shuttleworth sat down to type up the first ever Ubuntu release announcement.

This first Ubuntu OS, was a rough and ready stab at bringing Linux to the masses.

Intel Compute Stick now comes with Ubuntu

The Intel® Compute Stick now comes in more flavours, with the announcement that an Ubuntu version (Intel product number STCK1A8LFC) will be available globally via major online and retail stockists. This new Ubuntu-based version of the Intel Compute Stick is expected to be priced at around $110 USD and will go on sale next week.

Ubuntu coming to Russia on HP Devices

• HP to launch a number of laptops and desktop PCs preinstalled with Ubuntu in Russia
• Devices to be sold through major Russian resellers/distributors

May 2015, London: Canonical is pleased to announce that HP is launching a number of devices, preloaded with Ubuntu, in Russia. The devices, including notebooks and All-In-One PCs, will be available for purchase from selected resellers and distributors throughout the region by mid-May, 2015.

UBUNTU 14.04 LTS VERÖFFENTLICHT

Mit Ubuntu 14.04 LTS legt Canonical den Ubuntu-Fans ein eigenes Osterei ins Nest. Die neue Version aktualisiert und stabilisiert im wesentlichen die eigene Paketbasis und soll wie gewohnt fünf Jahre Support erhalten.

Um dem Trusty Tahr, so der Codename von Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, zu vertrauen, will man womöglich erstmal wissen, was denn genau die neue Version zu bieten hat. Die Release Notes zählen die Errungenschaften auf, zudem gibt es im nächsten Linux Magazin einen Artikel dazu. Wer es genau wissen will, kann in den Blueprints stöbern, die sämtliche Änderungen dokumentieren, wenn auch auf eher technischem Level.

Wichtig ist wie immer die Kernelversion: Ubuntu 14.04 wird den Kernel 3.13 mitbringen auf dessen Konto dann einige der Verbesserungen gehen. Allerdings patcht das Projekt den Kernel meist noch für die eigenen Bedürfnisse. Zu den Highlights gehören besserer Bonding-Support, besseres TCP-Connection-Management, ein neuer Standard-I/O-Scheduler (Deadline), Intels Power-Clamp-Code mit verbessertem Power Management, Xen und KVM mit ARM-Support, App-Armor-Optimierungen sowie Multiplattform-Support für ARM. Letzteres erlaubt es, einen Kernel für mehrere ARM-Plattformen zu bauen.

Python 3.4 ist mit an Bord und unterstützt nicht nur den Paketmanager Pip standardmäßig, sondern bringt auch ein Statistik-Modul mit. Upstart ist in Version 1.12.1 enthalten, wird aber in einer der folgenden Versionen von Systemd abgelöst, spätestens wohl mit Ubuntu 16.04. Im Cloud-Bereich setzt Ubuntu auf Open Stack, ebenfalls installieren lassen sich Puppet 3, Xen 4.4, Ceph 0.79, Qemu 2.0.0, Open Vswitch 2.0.1 , Libvirt 1.2.2, LXC 1.0 sowie MaaS 1.5 und Juju 1.18.1, letzteres ist Canonicals Service Orchestration Tool.

Auch auf dem Desktop gibt es Änderungen: Das eingesetzte Unity 7 bringt Support für High-DPI-Bildschirme mit und unterstützt Desktop-Scaling. Der neue Bildschirmschoner und Lock-Screen passen zum Design des Unity-Greeters, Menüs lassen sich nun in die Fenster der einzelnen Anwendungen einbetten und nicht mehr nur global über das Panel nutzen. Im Application Spread kann der User seine Anwendung der Wahl herausfiltern. Der selbst entwickelte Displayserver Mir ist noch nicht im Einsatz, Ubuntu setzt weiterhin auf X.org.

Neben Ubuntu bringen auch die zahlreichen offiziellen Derivate neue Versionen mit eigenen Highlights heraus, wobei Ubuntu Gnome erstmals einen Langzeit-Support von drei Jahren erhält. Von den Ubuntu-Touch-Abbildern für Smartphones und Tablets gibt es nach wie vor nur Preview-Versionen, auch wenn diese recht stabil laufen sollen. Unterstützt werden das Nexus 4 Phone, das Nexus 7 Tablet (von 2013) und das Nexus 10 Tablet. Keinen Support mehr liefert Canoncial indes für das Galaxy Nexus Phone sowie das Nexus 7 Tablet von 2012, man wolle sich auf die unterstützten Geräte konzentrieren.
